If you’re making a weekend, or a holiday of it, Gozo has so much to discover.
Beyond its beautiful coastline and crystal-clear water, the island has a fascinating history stretching back thousands of years. From prehistoric temples and fortified cities to traditional villages, churches and centuries-old stories, there’s plenty to explore while you’re here.
Here are a few places we recommend adding to your Gozo adventure.
Step back in time at the Citadel
No trip to Gozo is complete without a visit to the Cittadella, the spectacular fortified city overlooking Victoria. The site has been at the heart of Gozitan life for centuries, with a history stretching from prehistoric settlement through Roman times and the Knights of St John. Wander through the narrow streets, explore the museums and historic buildings, then walk along the fortified walls for incredible panoramic views across Gozo. Afterwards, head down into Victoria for a coffee, lunch or a wander around the shops and squares. A perfect half-day outing.
Visit the Ta' Pinu Basilica
Set amongst the Gozitan countryside, Ta’ Pinu is one of the island’s most important and beautiful religious landmarks. The sanctuary became an important pilgrimage site following events associated with local woman Karmela Grima in 1883, and the present Romanesque church was constructed during the early 20th century. It’s a peaceful place to visit even if you’re simply interested in Gozo’s architecture, history and culture. Take some time to explore the surrounding countryside and enjoy the views while you’re there.
Explore Gozo's villages
Some of the best moments in Gozo come from simply slowing down. Take a drive through the island’s traditional villages, stop in a village square for coffee, look out for the beautiful churches, old limestone buildings and religious niches that form part of everyday Gozitan life. Gozo’s villages have retained a wonderful sense of tradition, and exploring them is one of the easiest ways to experience the character of the island beyond the main tourist spots.
Beaches, Bays & the Gozitan coast
History lesson over, now it’s time for the Mediterranean! Pack your swimwear and spend an afternoon discovering Gozo’s bays, beaches and swimming spots. You could combine sightseeing with a trip to Ramla Bay, explore the dramatic coastline around Dwejra, or simply find a quiet spot for a swim and enjoy the sunshine.
Eat like a local
Make sure you arrive hungry! Gozo is full of wonderful places to enjoy fresh seafood, Mediterranean dishes and traditional Maltese and Gozitan food. Look out for local specialities and bakeries as you explore, and you absolutely have to try a pastizz while you’re here. Take your time over lunch, order something local and enjoy the slower pace of island life.
Discover the Ġgantija Temples
For something truly special, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Ġgantija Temples in Xagħra.
Built between approximately 3600 and 3200 BC, these extraordinary prehistoric structures offer a glimpse into life on Gozo more than 5,000 years ago. According to Gozitan legend, the enormous stones were carried and placed by a giantess — which is where the name Ġgantija, associated with “giants”, comes from. Combine your visit with a wander through the lovely village of Xagħra and stop for lunch or a drink in the village square. One for the history lovers.
See the Xewkija Rotunda
You’ll probably spot its enormous dome before you even reach the village. The Rotunda of Xewkija, dedicated to St John the Baptist, is Gozo’s largest church and one of the island’s most recognisable landmarks. Step inside to see the impressive limestone interior and, when accessible, head up towards the belfry for wonderful views across the island. The village itself also has a long history and is a lovely place to experience a quieter side of traditional Gozitan life.

Grab a coffee in a village square, watch the boats come and go from Mġarr Harbour, find somewhere beautiful for a sunset drink and enjoy being on island time.
Whether you spend your days exploring ancient temples, wandering through historic streets, swimming in the Mediterranean or doing very little at all, we hope you fall in love with Gozo just as much as we have.
